“Judging a contest is never easy, but it is incredibly challenging when it has such an interesting prompt: writing about how Korean literature is seen in one’s own country, and how people consume it. For this KLN Overseas Angle contest, we have received submissions from all over the world: Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America.



The manuscripts we have selected are the ones that we believe fit best with the purpose of the Overseas Angle column, essays that describe the reception of Korean literature in different countries. Some participants have quenched our curiosity by telling us what their families think about Korean literature, or by showcasing in detail the contests, gathering events, and book clubs that they have experienced first-hand, not only in words but also with photographs. Another important criterium in the selection process was the personal experience of the participants. We want to know what happens, but we also longed to feel immersed as if we were right there with them. Literature is universal, and books are about community: we read to enjoy new experiences vicariously through the pages, but also to share and talk about the books we love. At the same time, we have tried to uphold as much variety as possible in order to give our readers the opportunity to explore how Korean literature is received even in countries far away from their own. Our objective is to discover, together with our readers, a global Korean literature.“
